Rehabilitación comunitaria de los arrecifes urbanos de San Juan

Project that contributes directly to the sustainable development of the coast and the blue economy in Puerto Rico, mainly to improve the health of the La Ocho reef, which is particularly valuable in supporting multiple recreational and tourist activities such as swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving and surfing. In addition, it protects the most important recreational beach on the metropolitan coast. Restoring these corals represents rehabilitating the reproductive capacity of this species, the net growth capacity of the reef, and restoring the role of essential fish habitat, helping to restore food security.

It consists of the restoration of the coastal ecosystem, through the planting of trees for the benefit of the fauna of the area, improving the quality of the air and the temperature of the surrounding communities. This organization also provides 100% of school supplies as study tools for children in the area; it is responsible for the removal of waste from the beach and the mangrove, favoring the different ecosystems and eliminating the accumulation that was decades old; and gives talks to improve knowledge on environmental issues.

The project consists of offering educational, theoretical and practical workshops in sargassum management techniques and its utilities, to residents near the coasts of the municipalities of Cabo Rojo, Lajas, Guánica, Guayanilla, Peñuelas, Ponce and Santa Isabel, with emphasis on how to carry out the correct capture of these algae in a safe way while protecting other marine species such as the nests of sea turtles and the vegetation of the beach dunes. The main objective is to contribute to the education of the members of the coastal communities in how to obtain economic benefits with sargassum using it as feed for ruminants, poultry, and improvement of agricultural soils and creation of compost.

It is the only organization that works for the conservation of the Ridgway’s Hawk (Buteo ridgwayi), a critically endangered endemic bird. The project focuses its conservation efforts on preventing the high mortality of chickens caused by parasitic infestations of fly larvae with effective treatment, by strengthening the wild population through the reintroduction of hawks, and mitigating human persecution with a community educational program.

The main objective of this apiary developed by the Enactus team of Humacao Community College is to raise awareness and promote the conservation of the Puerto Rican bee through educational efforts carried out with the participants of the Hogar Nuevo Pacto organization. The project provides the opportunity for residents of this nonprofit to become certified as beekeepers, to build apiaries and develop the production of Apinéctar artisanal honey, which will generate income for the entity and promote sustainable agriculture in the area where it is located.

The objective of the project is to contribute to the country’s strategy for reducing single-use bags, by offering diversified and high quality products for reusable bags made with vinyl canvas. By learning sewing and screen printing, these heads of families continue in the entrepreneurship and produce eco-friendly bags for consumers.
