The project has transformed environmental education, not only for boys and girls, but also for adults. It works with environmental groups through virtual workshops and environmental challenges, raising awareness about the relationship between humans and the environment, climate change and how to build resilience in the midst of these difficult times.

The objective of this project is to empower community groups from the four coastal regions of Puerto Rico to take concrete actions to educate the most vulnerable communities by developing a plan for environmental care. This project consists of strengthening the productive systems of small and medium-sized producers in the Chorotega region, through the support of the EARTH University Center for Precision Agriculture, to strengthen local markets and improve the quality of life of the agricultural producers.

This project organizes rural communities that are losing their sources of livelihoods to climate change by providing training in sustainable agricultural practices via local environmental committees. Residents are given resources to build community tree nurseries to cultivate seedlings that will provide much-needed income for their families and communities; these seedlings will contribute to reforesting the Azuero peninsula, making their communities climate-resilient and restoring habitat for endangered wildlife.

Centro Paz para Ti (CPPT) garden project contributes to building sustainable and supportive communities that respond to the need to have access to fresh, local and agro-ecological food at affordable costs and promote an inclusive and violence-free Puerto Rico, integrating the gender perspective. This project focuses on efforts to strengthen factors that protect women from social and economic inequality. The CPPT is a resilient center that has been successful in responding to community needs during recent emergencies. As part of the Bosque Modelo de Puerto Rico, it has collaborated in training 75 rural women to enter the economic field of renewable energy and collect and purify rainwater.

The project works to find practical applications for the use of sargassum, so that it can become an alternative way of life for the coastal populations of the Dominican Republic, especially those where its use can be a source of employment for fishermen and their families, processing it and converting it into raw material for the production of handicrafts, fertilizers or environmentally friendly uses.

Project that contributes directly to the sustainable development of the coast and the blue economy in Puerto Rico, mainly to improve the health of the La Ocho reef, which is particularly valuable in supporting multiple recreational and tourist activities such as swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving and surfing. In addition, it protects the most important recreational beach on the metropolitan coast. Restoring these corals represents rehabilitating the reproductive capacity of this species, the net growth capacity of the reef, and restoring the role of essential fish habitat, helping to restore food security.

It consists of the restoration of the coastal ecosystem, through the planting of trees for the benefit of the fauna of the area, improving the quality of the air and the temperature of the surrounding communities. This organization also provides 100% of school supplies as study tools for children in the area; it is responsible for the removal of waste from the beach and the mangrove, favoring the different ecosystems and eliminating the accumulation that was decades old; and gives talks to improve knowledge on environmental issues.

This project provides access to marginalized communities to quality theoretical and practical education aimed at sustainable development, planting and the efficient use of resources for mitigation and adaptation to the effects of climate change, making them less vulnerable to it and facilitating their exit from the cycle of poverty. Educational field experiences, integrated into the school curriculum, are offered to public school students in Cataño and north Guaynabo, focused on sustainable techniques to produce native plants and the conservation of the environment, boosting ecological empowerment to mitigate the ravages of climate change and promote environmental rehabilitation in their communities.

Project focused on the creation of a community garden that will increase the availability of local food, at affordable prices and with high nutritional value to increase resilience and food security at the community level. With the distribution of these crops in the community, the carbon footprint associated with transportation to distant places to obtain food, as occurs in conventional agro-food systems, will be reduced.

Based on putting into practice examples of ecological restoration through appropriate species and permaculture techniques to promote the conservation, study and dissemination of the Dominican flora, especially in the Cibao Valley, through the “nature classroom” concept, the promotion of research, environmental education and recreation, favoring biodiversity and, at the same time, the enjoyment of ecosystem benefits and recreation for the individual and the society.

The project contributes to the strengthening of skills on best agricultural practices for producers with family farms and students of careers in agricultural sciences living in the District of Las Minas, Province of Herrera, through a plot for the demonstration of sustainable diversified production techniques, including aquaponics, organic fertilizer, plant reproduction (in situ nursery), and recovery of degraded and eroded soils.

The project focuses on guaranteeing the integral management of solid waste and wastewater in the Isla del Coco National Park, to contribute to the conservation of its marine and terrestrial biodiversity, through the composting of organic waste from the kitchen and a collection center for the classification, weighing and transfer of these wastes. Gray and black wastewater is managed through a traditional system of grease traps, ashtrays and septic tanks.

Program focused on the preservation of the mangroves of Jobos Beach and Secret Spot, located at Isabela, through a plan for the collection of seeds, controlled germination, reforestation, and conservation with the participation of the community. Its main objective is to educate through practical-educational workshops and other activities on the importance of mangroves as coastal ecosystems, as well as by placing educational signs and monitoring the plantings carried out. 

The project not only provides a cleaner and healthier environment, but also offers benefits to people’s mental and emotional health as they develop a greater sense of belonging when they see improvements near their places of residence and, even more, when they participate in the recovery and protection process of a river.

Project focused on creating a model green environment from an agroecological and sustainable perspective, so that children between the ages of 5 and 12 from the communities of Loíza, Río Grande, Canóvanas and Fajardo have access to educational and training experiences in food production and good agricultural practices in hydroponic systems. 

The project focuses on bringing access to energy for the first time to the community of Sabana Real in the border province of Independencia in the Dominican Republic, through the installation and commissioning of a rural micro-solar power plant that guarantees the energy independence of the community and strengthens the community structure to become a service cooperative that guarantees sustainability.

Project focused on developing an economically viable and environmentally healthy planting as a productive and educational tool to annually offer a 5-month intensive course in theory, agroecological practice and marketing for 30 people and a follow-up mentoring of 8 months for 2-5 people who are interested in training as growers.

The program aims to create social capital through supervised community management and in support of state management through awareness, training in sustainable productive activities, promotion of good practices for existing activities and education-action exercises in conservation matters, reforestation and monitoring of mangrove areas.

This project provides virtual training to teachers and provides them with quality sampling and water filtration kits to use them with their students so they can learn about the status of the water quality in their community and how to take remedial measures in the event of having any drinking water catastrophic event or phenomenon.

This program, aimed at public and private schools, aims to carry out activities of the #HarpyS-cool environmental education program in the communities of Boquerón Abajo, Boquerón Arriba and La Tranquilla, to promote the knowledge and conservation of important elements of biodiversity, such as the harpy eagle, other birds of prey, feline species, trees such as ceiba, guayacán and espavé, among others, as well as ecosystems such as rivers and forests.

The project seeks to take protective actions to reduce the effects of climate change and the removal of eggs, among other threats, seeking socioeconomic alternatives for the local community and establishing long-term conservation actions.

Composting starts at home is an environmental educational program that promotes organic recycling and compost generation as a means of reducing the amount of garbage that reaches landfills. Through community workshops, it has impacted thousands of families who have started their own compost project at home and replications of micro-projects have been generated in homes and communities. 

The project consists of accompanying a group of families who decided to resume the sowing practice known as zoteas, with which is carried out within a constant exchange of ancestral and contemporary knowledge. This monitoring also has the purpose of developing a botanical inventory of the existing plants in the territory; their common names in both Spanish and Embera -which is the most widely spoken indigenous language in the region-, and their medicinal, gastronomic and cultural uses.

The project consists of offering educational, theoretical and practical workshops in sargassum management techniques and its utilities, to residents near the coasts of the municipalities of Cabo Rojo, Lajas, Guánica, Guayanilla, Peñuelas, Ponce and Santa Isabel, with emphasis on how to carry out the correct capture of these algae in a safe way while protecting other marine species such as the nests of sea turtles and the vegetation of the beach dunes. The main objective is to contribute to the education of the members of the coastal communities in how to obtain economic benefits with sargassum using it as feed for ruminants, poultry, and improvement of agricultural soils and creation of compost.

It is the only organization that works for the conservation of the Ridgway’s Hawk (Buteo ridgwayi), a critically endangered endemic bird. The project focuses its conservation efforts on preventing the high mortality of chickens caused by parasitic infestations of fly larvae with effective treatment, by strengthening the wild population through the reintroduction of hawks, and mitigating human persecution with a community educational program.

The project seeks to protect the micro-basin and environment of the rural area on the outskirts of Santiago, creating an ecotourism and agricultural project that generates funds to educate students in this zone about protection of the environment and raise awareness among tourists visiting the area. The sowing of cocoa, coffee, avocados, lechoza, cranberry, pigeon peas, beans, plantains, yautia and bananas has been achieved.

The main objective of this apiary developed by the Enactus team of Humacao Community College is to raise awareness and promote the conservation of the Puerto Rican bee through educational efforts carried out with the participants of the Hogar Nuevo Pacto organization. The project provides the opportunity for residents of this nonprofit to become certified as beekeepers, to build apiaries and develop the production of Apinéctar artisanal honey, which will generate income for the entity and promote sustainable agriculture in the area where it is located.

The objective of the project is to contribute to the country’s strategy for reducing single-use bags, by offering diversified and high quality products for reusable bags made with vinyl canvas. As part of a social entrepreneurship, women who have been excluded from the labor market for gender discrimination or because they had to care for their small children are trained. By learning sewing and screen printing, these heads of families continue in the entrepreneurship and produce eco-friendly bags for consumers.

This project of the Puerto Rico Beekeepers Nucleus, Inc. (NA-PRI) has the objective of increasing and developing healthy, strong and disease-free population hives through the breeding of queen bees, which can be transported and used for cross-pollination services in the southern and central part of the island to contribute to food security and wildlife improvement.

This initiative seeks to recover the forest cover of Cerro La Trinidad, with the use of native species of the area, to return to these degraded sites their original situation of native forests; managing to attract biodiversity to the area, recovering scenic beauty, and improving air and water quality. The project has managed to reforest ten hectares on the hill using of native species in the area, with 95% survival.

Through this garden, nursery and agroecological laboratory, the Coalition for the Restoration of Eco-Systems in Santurce (CRES) works with the community in the restoration and conservation of coral reefs and dunes, reforestation and cleaning of coasts, urban areas and wetlands to achieve a sustainable socioecological relationship. The organization seeks to strengthen the infrastructure and safety of its workshop to create a laboratory where they could work on the scientific analysis of ecosystems with scientific citizens and double the amount of plants they generate.

This initiative of La Perla Community Impact Community Board evolves the concept of a community plant nursery towards an environmental education center that seeks to invite residents and visitors to explore agro ecology, to present urban agriculture as a possible source of income capable of generating employment and to strengthen community life around the planting and production of healthy foods.

The project seeks to turn Isla Cañas in the province of Veraguas into a 100% sustainable rural community. In Isla Cañas the burning of garbage is practiced and this generates the emission of greenhouse gases and toxic substances that are harmful to the health of the community. This initiative seeks to develop a suitable landfill, placing a collection center for recyclable material, generating a culture of use and taking advantage of organic waste to make community composting piles.

The Kale Mamá organization develops pollinator community gardens, which are catalysts for the community and provide educational spaces to connect people with sustainable habits, such as planting a garden, eating locally grown food, collecting rainwater, reusing materials and creating a wildlife habitat, among other actions.

The project aims to adapt the visitor center and discovery trail of El Valle de Antón to integrate self-financing and environmental education with the work carried out in the captive breeding laboratory. This is the only place in Panama where the public can learn about the golden frogs, endemic species and symbol of Panamanian culture.

This is a pioneer project of Nuestra Escuela, Inc. in Caguas, based on using the Quality of Life Garden as a classroom for preschoolers, so they can learn how to plant and harvest with the objective of leaving a lasting mark on the importance of agriculture and the spiritual and physical benefits of living together with nature, natural elements and people in their community.

The Burwigan project, of the Fundación Punto Inicial Plataforma Cultural, aims to educate children about environmental protection and raise awareness about climate change and plastic pollution in the Guna Yala region.

The preservation of the parrotfish species, sustainable fishing and education through schools and communities are the goals pursued by the “Food Security, Sustainable Fishing and Education for Coastal Areas of the Dominican Republic” campaign of the Institute for Socio-Ecological Research (ISER Caribe), aimed at the population that lives in these areas of the country.

Renacemos entre panas is a project of Wonderens Foods LLC, based in Mayagüez, which aims to increase the supply of breadfruits in the market, to contribute to improve food security on the Island. Also, this project contributes to the development of fruit farms, which provide benefits to the ecosystem of the community.

This initiative of the Latin American Sea Turtles organization aims to recover the populations of sea turtles that nest in Pacuare beach through the rescue of nests, community participation, raising awareness of children from nearby schools, as well as the collection and treatment of solid waste from the beach.

Established by two young farmers, Cosechas Tierra Viva is the first smart farm in Puerto Rico, implementing accessible technologies for food production through a model of sustainable, productive, efficient and profitable farming model, and which aims to promote and educate other stakeholders about the integration of these modern techniques.

El Yunque Emprende, created through a collaborative agreement among Vitrina Solidaria, Inc., the Federal Forest Service and El Yunque National Forest, is a business acceleration program that seeks to strengthen and make visible a sustainable and supportive business ecosystem, integrated into communities as a conservation strategy and co-management of El Yunque National Forest.

With this project, Fundación Arvita seeks to restore forest cover and preserve what already exists in deforested areas within the Panama West watershed model, through a theoretical and a practical approach with socioeconomic benefits.

The construction of a rainwater collection and irrigation system, which was affected by Hurricane Maria, will benefit the community garden through which the Montessori High School of Puerto Rico (SMPR) promotes sustainability and contributes to food security in the Island.

With the objective of preventing plastic materials from reaching landfills, the Martín Peña Recicla, Inc. organization expanded the recycling of type 1 and 2 plastics to the southern communities of the Caño Martín Peña in San Juan. The project, which employs residents of these communities as part of the commitment to the neighborhood’s solidarity economy, impacts a population of 15,022 residents of the area.

Building four machines that will allow any collection center in the country to become a manufacturing center with recycled materials is the mission of this project of Maker Space Panama.

The mission of this project of the Neotrópica Foundation is to increase the conservation actions of the mangroves of the Central Pacific Coast of Costa Rica through community reforestation and sustainable productive activities that generate economic benefits to the communities, while strengthening education and awareness towards the importance of the preservation of these eco-systems.

Its objective is to train students of Agricultural Sciences to start their own businesses, and thus stimulate the development of the economy, and promote sustainable agriculture on the island as a step forward towards food sovereignty.

The Vega Verde project of the C.E.C.E. Cayey entity was established with the objective of encouraging agricultural production to create jobs and improve nutrition and health of the population of the Vegas community in Cayey. Other goals of the program include: supplying food to the community commercial kitchen, educating residents on agricultural techniques and food security, and encouraging planting in neighborhood patios and roofs.

The objective of this project of the EcoEstudio Association is to build a small scale prototype of a closed culture system in a computer controlled environment, modeled as the Personal Food Computer of the MIT Media Lab, to subsequently implement it on a larger scale in a closed space of the size of a container.

BIO Pro Solutions is a bioprospecting laboratory in which the research that is carried out aspires to learn more about the microbial world and its wide metabolic diversity for the benefit of society and environmental biotechnology. This initiative has two main purposes: to contribute to generate knowledge and social capital, and to sensitize students about the environmental surroundings.

This project of the Oxfam organization in the Dominican Republic aims to offer access to drinking water to the inhabitants of abandoned areas in the Dominican-Haitian border through water distribution sites.

The project consists of the storytelling of folktales of different cultures related to the protection and study of the environment, which using cultural artifacts created with recycled products as a tool so that the topic is totally integrated and an ecological awareness is developed.

The objective of the initiative is for students and teachers to design solid waste reduction programs and establish action plans within school premises after having been educated about environmental issues such as recycling, composting and reuse, and having evaluated and audited the problem of solid waste in their school.

Through this project, the National Association for the Conservation of Nature Foundation (ANCON) aims to optimize the production system of coconut oil, identify potential uses for by-products derived from coconuts and strengthen its production chain.

Through the use of solar energy systems, Nuestra Escuela aims to achieve the viability of urban gardens of aromatic and medicinal plants, while aspiring to create the conditions to raise awareness among young people and children on renewable energy sources through an experiential educational process.

Raíces is a communication project focused on a documentary series about local initiatives that promote urban agriculture, sustainability and a sense of community: the Capetillo Urban Forest and Orchard, the Cantera Community Garden, Agrochic, Roosevelt Placita Organic Market, The Food Department and the garden on the roof of La Casita Blanca restaurant in Villa Palmeras.

This project studies the biological and socioeconomic impacts caused by the invasion of the lionfish in the Southern Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica, to learn the scope of its effects, generate strategies and environmental management plans in order to avoid affecting the biodiversity of the area.

Bambú Pueblo is an independent non-profit initiative that uses bamboo as a key resource for the development of socio-ecological impact projects, such as the production of fabrics to develop a sustainable industry that, among other benefits, generates jobs.

The project seeks to boost local ecotourism and promote the conservation of Río La Villa, which is born within the El Montuoso Reserve, which is the source of water for 100,000 people in the region, by enabling the trails within the Reserve and the creation of an information booth about the attractions.

Biorinken is a project that studies, educates and develops alternatives to oil and its derivatives in order to create an eco-friendly platform that provides companies with knowledge, techniques, assistance and resources that are environmentally responsible.

The implementation of this project aims to improve the socioeconomic status of 300 families in three districts of the Comarca Ngäbe Buglé, through technical training, human/Christian development and the implementation of agricultural and artisan business entrepreneurships.

This educational program of theoretical-practical workshops shows how communities can cope with the sargassum on the coasts of Puerto Rico and find potential uses for it, such as improving soil for sowing and serving as food for livestock.

Through eco-friendly puppets, this project seeks to educate and raise awareness in communities about the importance of reducing solid waste by 40% by diverting vegetative and organic material to produce compost and use it as organic fertilizer.

The purpose of this project is to promote the preservation of the harpy eagle species, declared National Bird, through environmental education activities and training in communities adjacent to vulnerable nesting areas or with some type of risk to the species.

The El Josco Bravo Agro-ecological project, whose objective is to contribute to the necessary reform of agriculture, is a non-profit agriculture school located in Toa Alta, whose mission is to socialize agro-ecological knowledge with young people committed to agriculture and sustainability.
